Field Trip – Hydrology and Birds: West River Memorial Park, New Haven – Dan May and Cheryl Cape

West River Memorial and Edgewood Parks are designated Important Bird Areas and are part of the New Haven Harbor Urban Refuge Partnership. The West River bisects both parks and has been channelized and engineered for flood control for over a century. The lower reach of the West River through Memorial Park is currently a brackish tidal marsh that offers the potential for many species, including early spring migrants. Walking is easy and flat along trails being developed by the West River Watershed Coalition along Marginal Drive and into Horseshoe Lagoon Park.

Meet at the parking lot at the southern boundary of the park, 64 Boston Post Road, just east of Marginal Drive. Overflow parking is available along Marginal Drive.
