Brickyard Point Field Trip Report – August 6, 2025
On Wednesday, August 6th, about 20 members of the NHBC went to this local preserve in North Haven. A former industrial waste site, it is now home to freshwater ponds and weedy fields and meadows. There are wide gravel paths that make it easy to survey the property. The property is situated near the Quinnipiac River and I-91. It is open to the public by appointment only. We saw a nice variety of birds there, including Wood Duck, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Solitary Sandpiper (perhaps the most uncommon bird seen on the walk), Snowy and Great Egret, Cooper’s Hawk, Bald Eagle, Eastern Kingbird, Marsh Wren, Cedar Waxwing and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. We were also pleased to observe a fledgling Osprey, first on its nest and then later on the roof of a building. The excursion from the nest might have been its first flight! We were pleased enough with our visit to this local property to consider planning another trip there for next month.
