SUMMARY:NHBC Youth Education - Lights Out CT: Migration - “Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene” Project
DESCRIPTION:All parents and children are invited to join the New Haven Bird Club (NHBC) for a variety of hands-on lessons and activities all about birds and birdwatching\, to spread the joy and beauty of observing birds and nature up close! \nFor this second session\, NHBC members will introduce Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene\, a collective community art project that engages the public about bird collisions with glass. Glass collisions are a leading cause of bird mortality\, and this project will highlight solutions you and others can take to prevent them. \nUsing recycled fabric scraps and glue\, you will recreate one of the 10\,836 birds that were killed by colliding with glass in Chicago in 2023. They will then become part of an art installation that can be used to raise awareness for this issue. DESCRIPTION:The “Birds in Words” book club will meet on Monday\, September 28\, 2026 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Mitchell Library in New Haven. \nFeel free to bring snacks to enjoy and share! \nThe club will discuss Feather Wars: And The Great Crusade to Save America’s Birds by James H. McCommons. \n“A definitive history of bird conservation in America.” (Kirkus Reviews\, starred)\n\nFrom the time the country was founded\, early Americans assumed that the land’s natural resources were infinite\, including its birds\, which were zealously hunted for food\, game\, and fashion. With the rapid extinction of the passenger pigeon―a bird once so numerous that its flocks darkened the sky in flight―many realized actions needed to be taken if other birds were to be saved. What followed was both a spiritual awakening and a great crusade to save birds and their habitat. The campaign took place on many battlefields: society teas in Boston\, hunt clubs on the East Coast\, the mangroves in the Everglades\, and in the editorial pages of newspapers and periodicals. They insulate against cold. They repel water. They even control sound. And how feathers work is just one aspect of the wonders of birds explained by pathbreaking researcher and birder Lorna Gibson in Birds Up Close. \nFeathers\, bones\, bills\, eggs\, flight: all come in for scrutiny in this engaging book. What produces the iridescence of plumage? How does the internal structure of a bird’s bones make them lightweight?
