Beaver Ponds Park, New Haven
On Saturday, April 28, members form NHBC and Friends of Beaver Ponds Park met. We slowly worked our way along the edge of Bowen Field and the marsh with views of the ponds. We stopped in the Urban Oasis area. We eventually surveyed the north pond.
34 species were seen or heard. Canada Goose, Mute Swan, Wood Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Mallard, Bufflehead, Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Turkey Vulture, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Herring Gull, Mourning Dove, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, American Crow, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, American Robin, European Starling, Cedar Waxwing, Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow Warbler, Savannah Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, and
American Goldfinch.
After the walk, Conservation Co-Chair Deborah Johnson provided fruit bearing shrubs to be planted in the park to provide food in the future for migrating birds.
