DESCRIPTION:The White Memorial Little Pond Boardwalk Trail is an elevated\, 1.2-mile loop trail located within the 4\,000-acre White Memorial Conservation Center\, an Important Bird Area. The trail crosses the Bantam River twice and proceeds through wetlands with waterfowl and various resident and migratory passerines. DESCRIPTION:Edgewood Park is an important stop-over site for migrating birds in the fall\, and a wide variety of song-birds\, raptors\, and land-birds are possible. Join us as we explore river\, woods\, pond\, and open field habitats. The walk is easy and flat\, but might include one dirt path through a wooded area and an often-wet field. Wear appropriate shoes. DESCRIPTION:Join Molly Zahn and Peter Grund for a walk at the Lake Wintergreen area of West Rock Ridge State Park. We will circle the lake and\, if there is time\, walk up to the water tower close to the top of the ridge. The walk around the lake is on gravel or dirt paths and is mostly flat. The walk to the ridge is uphill. DESCRIPTION:The “Birds in Words” book club will meet on Monday\, September 28\, 2026 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Mitchell Library in New Haven. \nFeel free to bring snacks to enjoy and share! \nThe club will discuss Feather Wars: And The Great Crusade to Save America’s Birds by James H. McCommons. \n“A definitive history of bird conservation in America.” (Kirkus Reviews\, starred)\n\nFrom the time the country was founded\, early Americans assumed that the land’s natural resources were infinite\, including its birds\, which were zealously hunted for food\, game\, and fashion. With the rapid extinction of the passenger pigeon―a bird once so numerous that its flocks darkened the sky in flight―many realized actions needed to be taken if other birds were to be saved. What followed was both a spiritual awakening and a great crusade to save birds and their habitat. The campaign took place on many battlefields: society teas in Boston\, hunt clubs on the East Coast\, the mangroves in the Everglades\, and in the editorial pages of newspapers and periodicals.
