DESCRIPTION:Group 1: 8–9:30 a.m.; Group 2: 9:30–11 a.m. \nMigrating birds looking for a place to rest and refuel on their southbound journeys are attracted to the variety of habitats within Cheshire Land Trust’s Fresh Meadows Preserve. With conifer groves\, deciduous woodlands\, and meadows\, all located along the Mill River\, it’s worth a visit. Expect a 1-2 mile walk on mostly level ground. Muck boots or other waterproof boots and footwear are strongly advised\, especially if there has been recent rain. We will have two groups of 10 people each. \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! If you are interested in participating with the walk\, please fill out the form below. Registrations are due by Tuesday\, September 8 at 10 pm. Participants will be selected at random from the registration list\, and you will be notified on Wednesday\, September 9 if you are on the attendee list or wait-listed. \nMeet at the information kiosk on Cook Hill Road. DESCRIPTION:The “Birds in Words” book club will meet on Monday\, September 28\, 2026 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Mitchell Library in New Haven. \nFeel free to bring snacks to enjoy and share! \nThe club will discuss Feather Wars: And The Great Crusade to Save America’s Birds by James H. McCommons. \n“A definitive history of bird conservation in America.” (Kirkus Reviews\, starred)\n\nFrom the time the country was founded\, early Americans assumed that the land’s natural resources were infinite\, including its birds\, which were zealously hunted for food\, game\, and fashion. With the rapid extinction of the passenger pigeon―a bird once so numerous that its flocks darkened the sky in flight―many realized actions needed to be taken if other birds were to be saved. What followed was both a spiritual awakening and a great crusade to save birds and their habitat. The campaign took place on many battlefields: society teas in Boston\, hunt clubs on the East Coast\, the mangroves in the Everglades\, and in the editorial pages of newspapers and periodicals.
