SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Field Trip – White Memorial Foundation: Birding and Tracking – Craig Repasz
DESCRIPTION:**Please note: This event has been cancelled. \nWhite Memorial Foundation is a 4\,000-acre nature preserve. The diverse mixture of habitats includes mature deciduous and evergreen forests\, as well as fields of tall grass\, weeds\, and shrubs that are managed for various stages of succession. One of the best birding sites in the state and an Important Bird Area\, White Memorial Foundation has approximately 35 miles of woodland roads\, trails\, and boardwalks. We could observe a variety of sparrows\, woodpeckers\, possibly winter finches\, owls and more. We will be joined by experienced trackers Christin Arnini and Gail Cameron. Mammals that reside at White Memorial such as otters\, beavers\, bobcats\, foxes\, deer\, coyotes\, and mink are active in the winter and leave clues about their travels and ways of surviving this most difficult time of the year. \nMeet in the public parking lot at White Memorial at 80 Whitehall Road in Litchfield. \nLeader: Craig Repasz\, 203-745-6683 or crepasz@hotmail.com

SUMMARY:Wingspan Game Event - Sunday\, March 29 at Whitney Center
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of playing Wingspan\, the board game focused on birds! For players new to Wingspan\, we will offer an introduction to the game and a guided playing experience. Players already familiar with Wingspan are welcome to set up independent games. \nThe game is played over four rounds\, which involve different “actions” of acquiring foods and bird cards\, laying eggs\, and playing bird cards on a player mat. Players get points by reaching short-term and long-term goals\, and the player with the most points at the end of round four wins! A four-round game takes 1-2 hours. If you are interested in learning more about the rules\, you will find more information here. \nTo help with logistics\, please let us know via email if you are planning to join us and what your experience with playing the game is (no experience is absolutely fine!). The NHBC has a number of base sets of the game\, but feel free to bring your own game as well. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nOrganizer: Peter Grund\, petergrund93@yahoo.com

SUMMARY:Indoor Meeting – Birds: Their Side of the Story – John Himmelman
DESCRIPTION:How did our best-known birds earn that distinction? What are some of the crazy things they make us do? Why are there so many pigeons in cities? How adept are crows— for real now\, at using a screwdriver? What did Ben Franklin really think about turkeys and eagles? John Himmelman shares light-hearted stories of birds and bird watching – from cuisine to cartoons\, ornaments to icons\, murmurs to murders. You’ll be given a whole new look at the avian friends we so admire (and some\, not so much…). \nNOTE: The April meeting is our Annual Meeting per our by-laws.

The timing should be good for us to find a mix of resident and migrating salt marsh birds\, raptors\, and woodland species. A bonus – at the end of the walk a trolley from the museum will give us a ride back to our starting point. \nMeet in the rear parking lot of the Shore Line Trolley Museum\, 17 River Street\, East Haven. \nLeader: DeWitt Allen\,  860-949-0995 or allendatlow@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Sleeping Giant State Park - Jim Sirch\, Craig Repasz and DeWitt Allen
DESCRIPTION:Sleeping Giant dominates the landscape north of New Haven. The park hosts diverse habitats: riparian woods\, rivers and streams\,  stands of white pines\, mature deciduous forests\, and cliffs and meadow edge. Although it is famous for its ankle-twisting and heart-pumping terrain\, we will bird along the uphill but (mostly) smooth-surfaced Tower Path. As we move slowly along the Path\, we can expect to find a rich mix of migrant and resident warblers\, thrushes\, vireos\, and woodpeckers. We should be able to locate the nesting ravens and may also get glimpses of the resident Peregrine Falcons. \nMeet at the Sleeping Giant State Park entrance on Mt. Carmel Avenue\, Hamden. \nLeaders: Jim Sirch\, jimsirch95@gmail.com; \nCraig Repasz\, 203-745-6683 or crepasz@hotmail.com; \nDeWitt Allen\, 860-949-0995 or allendatlow@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Chippens Hill Grassland Birds - Jack Swatt
DESCRIPTION:The Chippens Hill area of Bristol has historically been farmland. The Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut and the city of Bristol are working to save some of the habitat where Bobolinks\, Meadowlarks\, and Grasshopper Sparrows have been found. Join Jack Swatt for a tour of these areas in search of these declining species. Bring plenty of water and be prepared to walk in sunny field habitat that may contain ticks. \nMeet at the Bristol Dog Park parking lot at 400 Perkins Street in Bristol\, just north of the intersection with Pinehurst Road. \nLeader: Jack Swatt\, 203-592-4686 or jswattbirds@gmail.com
