SUMMARY:Field Trip - Geology and Birds\, Branford - Cheryl Cape and Dan May
DESCRIPTION:Rain date: Sunday\, April 19\, 2026 \nJoin a field trip that explores natural resources and birds in two rock areas in rural Branford and suburban New Haven. The trip starts at the Kelley Memorial Preserve in Branford\, which surrounds the active Stony Creek quarry. Stony Creek granite is a building stone mined here since the late 19th century. We hike a moderately strenuous loop of 2 miles\, observing the geological features and the birds in woodland and riparian settings. An optional (and shorter) second part of the trip\, after a rest stop on I-95\, will be at Quarry Park Preserve in Fair Haven Heights. This small\, wooded preserve in sandstone bedrock was quarried from the 1700s to the early 1900s. \nMeet at the Kelley Memorial Preserve parking lot\, 103-127 Quarry Road\, Branford. We will explore the Branford quarry area until 10:30 am\, and then meet at Quarry Park in New Haven at roughly 11 am. We will park along Russell Street to access Quarry Park. \nLeaders: Cheryl Cape and Dan May\, cherylc@newhavenbirdclub.org\, (203) 343-4490

SUMMARY:Indoor Meeting – Birds: Their Side of the Story – John Himmelman
DESCRIPTION:How did our best-known birds earn that distinction? What are some of the crazy things they make us do? Why are there so many pigeons in cities? How adept are crows— for real now\, at using a screwdriver? What did Ben Franklin really think about turkeys and eagles? John Himmelman shares light-hearted stories of birds and bird watching – from cuisine to cartoons\, ornaments to icons\, murmurs to murders. You’ll be given a whole new look at the avian friends we so admire (and some\, not so much…). \nNOTE: The April meeting is our Annual Meeting per our by-laws.

SUMMARY:Wingspan Game Event - Sunday\, March 29 at Whitney Center
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of playing Wingspan\, the board game focused on birds! For players new to Wingspan\, we will offer an introduction to the game and a guided playing experience. Players already familiar with Wingspan are welcome to set up independent games. \nThe game is played over four rounds\, which involve different “actions” of acquiring foods and bird cards\, laying eggs\, and playing bird cards on a player mat. Players get points by reaching short-term and long-term goals\, and the player with the most points at the end of round four wins! A four-round game takes 1-2 hours. If you are interested in learning more about the rules\, you will find more information here. \nTo help with logistics\, please let us know via email if you are planning to join us and what your experience with playing the game is (no experience is absolutely fine!). The NHBC has a number of base sets of the game\, but feel free to bring your own game as well. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nOrganizer: Peter Grund\, petergrund93@yahoo.com
