SUMMARY:Book Club - Monday\, June 29\, 2026 at Mitchell Library\, New Haven
DESCRIPTION:The “Birds in Words” book club will meet on Monday\, June 29\, 2026 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Mitchell Library in New Haven. \nFeel free to bring snacks to enjoy and share! \nThe club will discuss Lorna Gibson’s Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders. \nA renowned engineer and lifelong birder reveals the marvel of how birds work—from the tips of their beaks to the sheen of their tailfeathers. \nWith over 150 full-color illustrations\, a unique gift book for everyone from the avid birder to the bird beginner. \nConsider feathers: They define birds’ wings\, enabling flight. They insulate against cold. They repel water. They even control sound. And how feathers work is just one aspect of the wonders of birds explained by pathbreaking researcher and birder Lorna Gibson in Birds Up Close. \nFeathers\, bones\, bills\, eggs\, flight: all come in for scrutiny in this engaging book. What produces the iridescence of plumage? How does the internal structure of a bird’s bones make them lightweight? How do different birds use their bills and tongues—from woodpeckers penetrating the holes they drill to hummingbirds imbibing nectar\, to sandpipers needling the sand\, and to phalaropes drawing water droplets containing plankton into their mouths without sucking (no lips!)? \nDrawing on her expertise and personal experience in both engineering and ornithology\, the author explores the hidden microscopic structures and engineering principles that keep birds aloft and alive—how an egg is formed\, how a bird generates lift; how raptors soar and glide\, albatrosses fly thousands of miles\, hummingbirds hover\, puffins and penguins “fly” underwater. She also considers the longer view of birds in their habitats and natural history. Her up-close look at avian mysteries provides a perspective like no other for the expert ornithologist and curious observer alike. \nAny questions\, contact Craig Repasz at craigr@newhavenbirdclub.org.

SUMMARY:Book Club - Monday\, September 28\, 2026 at Mitchell Library\, New Haven
DESCRIPTION:The “Birds in Words” book club will meet on Monday\, September 28\, 2026 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Mitchell Library in New Haven. \nFeel free to bring snacks to enjoy and share! \nThe club will discuss Feather Wars: And The Great Crusade to Save America’s Birds by James H. McCommons. \n“A definitive history of bird conservation in America.” (Kirkus Reviews\, starred)\n\nFrom the time the country was founded\, early Americans assumed that the land’s natural resources were infinite\, including its birds\, which were zealously hunted for food\, game\, and fashion. With the rapid extinction of the passenger pigeon―a bird once so numerous that its flocks darkened the sky in flight―many realized actions needed to be taken if other birds were to be saved. What followed was both a spiritual awakening and a great crusade to save birds and their habitat. The campaign took place on many battlefields: society teas in Boston\, hunt clubs on the East Coast\, the mangroves in the Everglades\, and in the editorial pages of newspapers and periodicals. From many corners of the country the bird protection movement was born and brought together a remarkable coalition of people and organizations to save America’s birds. \nThe Feather Wars is an entertaining and expansive work of American history\, an incredible story about how disparate characters―progressive politicians\, free-thinking society belles\, nature writers and artists\, bird-loving U.S. presidents\, gunmakers\, business titans\, and brave game wardens―came together to save hundreds of species of birds. Heroes\, martyrs\, villains\, and conflicted do-gooders―the early bird conservation movement had them all. Together they transformed how Americans thought and cared about birds\, forever altering the American landscape. \nAny questions\, contact Craig Repasz at craigr@newhavenbirdclub.org.

SUMMARY:Book Club - Monday\, November 16\, 2026 at Mitchell Library\, New Haven
DESCRIPTION:The “Birds in Words” book club will meet on Monday\, November 16\, 2026 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Mitchell Library in New Haven. \nFeel free to bring snacks to enjoy and share! \nThe club will discuss The Story of Birds: A New History from Their Dinosaur Origins to the Present by Steve Brusatte. \nTens of billions of birds share the planet with us\, an astonishingly diverse array of species that are present nearly everywhere humans call home—and many places we do not. With their flamboyant plumage\, joyous dawn serenades\, extraordinary aerial feats\, they have captivated human imagination for millennia. Undeniably delicate creatures with hollow bones and thin skin protected by downy feathers\, how did such a seemingly fragile species break the bounds of Earth and begin to fly\, how have they survived millennia\, and how does their legacy shape our world? \nHailed as “one of the stars of modern paleontology” (National Geographic)\, Steve Brusatte now tells the extraordinary story of the dinosaurs’ living legacy: birds. He begins by exploring how dinosaurs gradually developed the trademark features of birds one-by-one—feathers\, wings\, beaks\, big brains\, keen senses\, and warm-blooded metabolisms. He investigates why birds were the only dinosaurs to survive the cataclysmic asteroid impact 66 million years ago and chronicles how these survivors rapidly proliferated to produce the diversity of avian species we know today.\nAlong the way\, we meet a variety of remarkable – now extinct – species: \n\n10-foot-tall terror birds with beaks that sliced flesh\nElephant birds that lived on Madagascar and laid eggs the size of footballs\nPelagornithid seabirds with 20-foot wingspans\nA ferocious Jamaican ibis that used its wings as clubs to attack rivals\n\nYet\, Brusatte also urges us to appreciate the extraordinariness of birds alive today – penguins that literally fly underwater\, parrots that can mimic human speech and crows that can make tools and are smarter than most mammals.\nA fascinating scientific history that unearths the origins of birds\, The Story of Birds establishes the living legacy of this remarkable species. \nAny questions\, contact Craig Repasz at craigr@newhavenbirdclub.org.
