Field Trip – Bent of the River, Southbury – Managing for Forest and Shrubland Birds – Corrie Folsom-O’Keefe
June 3, 2017 @ 7:00 am - 11:00 am
On this trip we will look for shrubland and forest nesting birds at the Bent of the River Audubon Sanctuary. At this Important Bird Area, approximately 100 acres of fields are managed for shrubland nesting birds, including Blue-winged Warbler, Indigo Bunting, and Prairie Warbler. The IBA also includes roughly 600 acres of forest and supports species such as Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Black-throated Green Warbler, and Worm-eating Warbler. We will listen and look for these species and talk about what goes into managing their habitats. This walk is geared to beginners but birders of all levels and families are welcome. More advanced birders not only can enjoy a day out but also provide support and inspiration to the newcomers. Meet at the parking lot just beyond the entrance, 185 East Flat Hill Rd in Southbury.
Leader: Corrie Folsom-O’Keefe, 203-630-9640 (home–preferred number) 203-233-0535 (cell–only on the morning of trip) or cfolsom-okeefe@audubon.org
