Field Trip – Barn Island Wildlife Management Area, Stonington – Daniel Errichetti

Barn Island WMA is a large expanse of varied habitat along the Connecticut shore near the Rhode Island border, including large tracts of salt marsh, deciduous woodlands and a large brushy field. We’ll see 60+ species of birds, with notable resident species including White-eyed and Yellow-throated Vireo, Saltmarsh Sparrow and Willow Flycatcher likely to be seen. This is a good spot to look for rare shorebirds such as Wilson’s Phalarope and Black-necked Stilt. We’ll take a long hike of approximately 4 to 5 miles through the property, which is mostly flat on good trails. Wear comfortable shoes and bring bug spray and water.

Updates as of May 4/2025:
Attention New Haven Bird Club Members:  the field trip to Barn Island on May 25^th will still take place, but there are some changes: Daniel Errichetti (danerrichetti@gmail.com) will replace Chris Loscalzo as the field trip leader and the meeting location will be at the parking area near the south end of Palmer Neck Road in Stonington at 8 am and NOT the commuter lot in Branford at 7 am.  Anyone interested in attending the walk should plan on being at the parking area at Barn Island at 8 am.
