Indoor Meeting (hybrid) – A River Runs Through Us: The Environmental History of the Connecticut River Region – Patrick J. Lynch

After 11,000 years of Indigenous Peoples’ history and more than 400 years of inhabitants from Europe and the rest of the globe, New England presents us with a uniquely humanized American landscape. The soft, domesticated contours of the familiar New England wilds don’t easily fit into romantic notions of unspoiled wilderness. Steeped as it is in human and ecological history, with deeply layered cultural associations and great beauty, nature in New England is neither a determining force nor a passive victim. It sometimes seems that New England’s landscape was designed to teach us that people are never outside the natural world and that looking for a pristine wilderness today is a fool’s errand. This talk will look at the myriad ways that interactions between the land, wildlife, and people have shaped the Connecticut River region we know today.
