Long Wharf Nature Preserve and Urban Oasis, New Haven- Cancelled
August 22, 2020 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
This will be our fourth trip to this evolving and ever-improving site in the heart of downtown New Haven. An environmentally-focused family-friendly late afternoon walk on a falling tide as the shorebird migration gets under way. We’ll begin with a one-mile walk along the trail to the urban oasis and circle to the harbor, traveling through three separate ecosystems as the ground falls to sea level. Then we’ll spend time along the shoreline, looking for early migrants such as sandpipers, terns, and perhaps oystercatchers. Binoculars will be available for those without, and we’ll have a birding telescope to view into the harbor. This is a joint walk with New Haven Land Trust. We will enter our bird observations into eBird and show how it is done. Meet at the entrance to the Preserve. Off-street parking is available in a lot on Long Wharf Drive across from the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial.
